BESS project steps

the common step-by-step approach for small or large projects

Updated over a week ago

What to do:

A BESS project often has the following steps:

Evaluation

Before any investment decision, detailed review of schedule, revenues estimates investment requirements and ROI are defined clearly.

Paneco provides clear all inclusive budgetary proposals and revenues estimates on various energy and frequency markets.

Planning and permitting

The location needs to be close to a grid connection point, have sufficient space and go through a standard local construction and permitting process. Fire department review, environmental review (noise, pollution) and detailed site layout are submitted and approved.

Paneco will help you prepare an optimized layout that complies with NFPA855 recommendations, and provide noise reports to facilitate your permitting process.

Contracts and purchasing

BESS supplier is selected and both storage, inverters and MV transformers are purchased. Power automation control systems and required services and interfaces need to be selected and contracted.

Paneco provides full solutions, with BESS storage, inverters, cabling and MV transformers. We also offer control systems, with our EU partners, and have pre integration for AI optimized trading service providers.

Construction

Your EPC contractor builds the foundations and cabling ducting to prepare for installation.

Paneco has the lowest construction and environmental footprint in the industry. We minimize construction costs and protect the environment.

Delivery and installation

The battery storage system will usually be manufactured in Asia or Europe and shipped to your site. logistics expertise is necessary. It is installed on site and connected to the substation or grid connection point.

You are not expected to be an international logistics expert. Paneco takes care of the paperwork and deliver DAP to your site.

Commissioning and acceptance

Your BESS supplier, together with any third party you have appointed, helps complete the BESS pre qualification tests, followed by acceptance tests which lead to the TSO acceptance.

For large projects, there is a simulation testing requiring advanced simulation models which needs to be validated by TSO prior to connecting to the grid. Paneco has access to an experienced simulation team and a track record to help you pass this step.

Operational start

You can now operate your BESS and participate in day-ahead energy and frequency reserve market trading.

Time is money: the time from investment to operational start needs to be as short as possible. Paneco has a just-in-time supply chain and will often be able to supply your full BESS in 60 to 90 days (plus 45 to 60 days for delivery and installation).

Who does what :

The parties involved often include:

EPC contractor

(Engineering - Procurement - Construction) for foundations and road works

Electrical contractor for cabling

from BESS system > transformers > substation > grid connection point.

Substation, HV transformer, provider

for large parks a 110kV transformer and substation is required. For small and medium sized projects the connection is 20kV to 33kV and the BESS MV transformers are sufficient.

BESS supplier

The BESS supplier will manufacture, deliver, install and help bring to commercial operation battery storage, inverters and Medium Voltage transformers and related switchgears.

SCADA EMS provider

Your BESS system needs a SCADA controller with grid energy market functions, and with data and control interfaces for your EMS platform, trading service provider, your remote control room and the TSO control room.

Market and trading services providers

In order to participate in the energy markets, you will need to either have a direct contract with the TSO or have a service provider that does. And you will need an automated, intelligent day-ahead trading agent.

Control room service

TSO may require that you monitor your energy asset 24h a day and provide them with direct control via IEC104 interface for operation. This is usually done remotely and can be outsourced.
